Bio

Ulysses Currie was elected to the Maryland State Senate in 1994, after serving for eight years in the Maryland House of Delegates.   Because of his fiscal prudence, creativity, and legislative astuteness, Senator Currie quickly ascended to become Chairman of the Budget and Taxation Committee, one of the Maryland Legislature’s most important positions.

During his tenure as Committee Chairman, Senator Currie has successfully balanced every budget that has come across his desk while making sure that important programs in education, health care, public safety and job creation continued to be funded.  This past year, Senator Currie played a pivotal role in securing $250 million in construction funds for Maryland’s K-12 schools.  Of this, $30 million went to Prince George’s County schools, an increase larger than any other county in the state!

Before entering the legislature, Senator Currie served Prince George’s County as an educator for over 25 years.  He continues to be one of the General Assembly’s strongest proponents of public schools.  He served in the U.S. Army for three years, and is active in the Maryland Veterans’ Caucus.  Senator Currie is married to the Reverend Shirley Gravely Currie and has two sons.  He lives in Forestville.
